It has been almost three years since I have been in Malaysia and it's crazy how time flies! One of the locations that I got to visit was Kukup which is a small fishing village which is famous for their open air seafood restaurants!

If you have the time, visit Kukup! The seafood is great but be warned that most of the buildings have plumbing that come from the river, so if you are not comfortable with that you might want to rethink it.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00582210481749726257noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7402094292390604458.post-18036695005044274342015-05-14T10:11:00.000-04:002015-05-14T10:11:03.859-04:00Throwback Thursday: Fiordland National Park, New Zealand

One of our stops were Mirror Lakes where the water is so calm that it acts as a mirror to the surround landscapes. Looking into the water, we were able to see still reflections of the mountain range that was there. Even the sign was reflected so that we can read it!

Going back on the Utah/Arizona trip train and this time I'm revisiting the Toadstools hike that we did on our way to Zion national park back in November. Toadstools are rock formations where the top layer of rock is stronger than the lower layers and over time, the weather causes the weaker rock to erode. The erosion occurs faster for the weaker rock naturally, so all around this hike there are multiple rock formations that look like the little guy from Super Mario!

The whole trail is pretty much flat until the end where there is a little hill to climb up to another flat area. When you are the end the of the trail, all of the orange rock makes you feel like you are on a while other planet.

Today we revisit Grand Canyon because my brother is currently there today and I do miss it there! We spent one full day walking around the rim of the grand canyon and it was pretty intense. It wasn't much hiking but it was a long walk!

During the walk, we saw wildlife and beautiful views of the canyon from the top. Maybe next time we go, we will actually hike down to the bottom.

During last year's cruise to Canada, we took a little tour to the Bay of Fundy and a little fishing village named St Martins. This was available when we docked in St John and the drive out was about 45mins to 1 hour. The entire ride with the tour guide was very fun since she was very knowledgeable and very witty.

We drove out first to the Bay of Fundy where you are only able to walk out to the cave at a specific time of day when the water is at low tide. We got there just in time and I was able to make the 20 minute walk out there to step into that cold water!

Right next to the bus stop, there was a place well known for the clam chowder and it has got to be the best place I have ever had a New England clam chowder. It had chunks of fish and crab and it was nice and creamy. I honestly might make that same drive out there on my own since it's not too far from Maine.

After a short visit, we got back onto the bus and headed to St Martins which is a small fishing village. The water was in low tide but in the short time we were there, the water level definitely went up pretty quickly.

I have been writing a lot about Utah and Arizona in the last few weeks so I decided to switch gears and talk about my tour of the Sydney Opera house!

On our second in Sydney, we had a big rain storm so we were looking for things to do indoors. Before we left for our honeymoon, I had done research for these things just in case of weather and I had know about the tours that were given daily. We got to opera house and we were able to sign up for one of the last tours for the day. They were actually closing early due to a performance rehearsal later that day.

The tour was $75AUD and it is worth it if you are interested in learning more about how the opera house was built and more about the architecture of the building. We were able to walk through the whole building and stepped into one of the theaters to listen to the acoustics while a group practiced.

Lake Powell is a man made reservoir and touches two states, Utah and Arizona. When we stayed in Page for Antelope Canyon and Horse Shoe bend, we had extra time before the sun set to we drove around looking for places to hike or see. We arrived at a vantage point that gave us a beautiful view of the lake and from there you can see the beautiful blue water contrast against the orange landscape.

The vantage point we went to was called the Wahweap overlook and this gave us a nice view from above. You can also visit Lake Shore drive where you can drive along the edge of the water. For more information, I would go to the nearest visitor center which is only 5 minutes away, and they were friendly enough to suggest short day hikes!

So last week (link here in caused you missed it) I wrote about the Desert View Watchtower at the Grand Canyon and showed pictures of how the view is at night. This week, I am back talking about the same view but during the day.

During the day, you can go up the watch tower and you can have a 360 view of the canyon's south rim. Since the landscape is pretty flat, you can view miles and miles out with nothing getting in your way.

After you are down looking at the spectacular views, you can go visit the little gift shop on the ground floor to buy whatever you want! If you were to ask me though, which view is the best I would definitely say that nighttime is better =). Coming from a big city, I don't get to see the night sky filled with stars and this is one of the best places to view it at night.

BONUS PIC! This was my husband and I at the outdoor viewing area. Don't mind the way I was dressed, I was wearing something comfy for our long ride out from Grand Canyon to Horse shoe BendAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00582210481749726257noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7402094292390604458.post-89105871368692872302015-03-26T12:00:00.003-04:002015-03-26T12:00:54.826-04:00Throwback Thursday: Desert View Watchtower, Grand Canyon South Rim

If you are visiting Grand Canyon National Park, make one of your stops the Desert View Watchtower. It is a high point of view that overlooks the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and it is only open for certain times of the day. You can still look around the watchtower after it closes but the view is definitely different from the top.

We originally came here on our first day at Grand Canyon but by the time we got there, the top of the tower was closed. We hung around the area and took some photos of the sunset and photos of the stars at night. It is very dark in the area and there is also wildlife so make sure that you bring strong flashlights.

The view during the day is completely different so this might be worth it to come back twice. It's actually not that far from the main part of the national park. All of the photos so far from this post were during the sunset and that;s when you can get the nice blue hues from the sky and land. If you come during the day, everything will be bright orange! I'll continue to post more photos of this location during the day in a part two if this post!

Not too far from Antelope Canyon, there is another attraction that is well known to a lot of photographers and tour companies. It is called the Horse shoe bend where is it one of the most photographed areas of the Colorado river that runs through Arizona.

This hike was an easy one, with about a quarter mile uphill and the rest was flat to the edge. The total trip was about 1 mile each way. When we got there, several other tour buses were stopped there to wait for the sunset just like we were. We arrived about 30 minutes before so that we can find a place to set up our cameras and to enjoy the view.

Be careful if you do want to get to the edge though, there are warnings all over the edge mentioning that the rock is soft and could break under pressure. There are also a lot of people on the edge so don't be too "brave"!

I highly suggest getting there close to sunset and bringing some flashlights cause the light will dissipate quickly and there are no lights along the path towards the car park. Be prepared!

On our trip to Arizona and Utah, we were able to visit Zion National Park where we had a list of hikes that we wanted to do. For months before the actual trip, we did a lot of research on the most popular hikes and whether or not we can fit them into our two short days there.

We ended up choosing the hike up to Angel's Landing which was one of the most popular during the peak season and probably one of the most strenuous treks there. The trail itself is just 2.4miles one way, but don't think that it can be done in 1 hr unless you are EXTREMELY fit. In those 2.4 miles, you have an elevation gain of 1,488 ft and the first two miles are paved, steep, switchbacks where you will find a lot of vantage points along the way.

The last half mile is not paved and there are chains for grip to help you along. This was the scariest part of it all and for those who have a fear of heights, it would take a lot out of you just to walk across some parts where the stepping ground is only about 1 foot wide. During peak season, this trail is filled with people who would cut in front of you, which might make you nervous.
Don't let this deter you from hiking up to the 2 mile point though, where you would still get great views of the canyon! All six of us hiked all the way up to Angel's landing, had lunch, and came back down in about 6 hours. Two of us (including myself) are afraid of heights and it was very nerve wracking at some points of the trail where there wasn't much to work with. The view at the top was so worth it though!
February is the shortest month of the year and clearly I didn't upload much to Instagram. I did go on vacation however so it's still a win for me! I was in Orlando for a week and I did share some photos of the Wizarding world of Harry Potter so go check out the gallery below!

So when in New Zealand, you must do something adventurous because that is what the entire country is about! There are bungee jumps, parachute jumps, etc everywhere! We decided to join an underground tour that took us zip lining, and rappelling into a dark glow worm cave near at Waitomo caves.

The tour company we went with was Black Water Rafting co and we chose the Black abyss tour which was their longest and strenuous one they had. We have found out that if you are booking, there are several sites and all of them are around $250 but in different currencies. Definitely shop around to see which one works out the best for you, we chose to buy it in New Zealand Dollars because the currency conversion rate was in our favor.

Before the tour started, we were outfitted with wet suits and given a quick crash course on how to rappel down into the caves. We had two knowledgeable tour guides that helped us navigate through the caves because it is very easy to get lost down there. We also weren't allowed to bring our own cameras so they became out personal photographers as well! They also carried our lunches for us which included some nice hot chocolate which was amazing when you are wading in sometimes waist deep water.
Entering the canyon via a staircase

I can't believe that it has been 3 months since I went to Antelope Canyon. Ever since starting photography in 2008 it has always been on my list of places to see! There are two canyons (lower and upper) and both require tours in order to visit them. There are several tour companies and we went with Ken's tours for the lower canyon.

There were six of us and we had to split up since half of us had "professional" cameras and the other half had "non professional". The regular tour is only an hour and the tour guides are really good at pointing out different features along the canyon. For me, I joined a photographers tour which was two hours and no guide. Even though I didn't have a guide, we met many along the way and they were happy to tell us where and when was the best time/place to take a photo!

Luckily for my friends and I, we ran into another photography tour and they timed it where a light shaft was coming down into the canyon. The light shafts are really hard to time and unless you are in the canyon everyday (like a tour guide) you would have no idea when to go! For now, this has been checked off my bucket list, but I will make it back there one day =)

Happy Chinese New Year everyone!! Rather than post photos from a past trip, I decided to post some photos from the Chinese New Year parade from 2009 in Chinatown, NYC. It was my first time watching the parade with my new DSLR and of course I had to take some pictures =)

If you are in NYC, the firecracker ceremony is today and the annual parade will be held on Sunday! Go check it out if you are interested! Beware, it will be REALLY crowded

Located on the north island of New Zealand, Tongariro national park is the road to Mount Doom (Lord of the Rings reference) aka Mount Ngauruhoe. The national park is the oldest park in New Zealand and everyday there are plenty of people who hike the Tongariro Alpine crossing which is 12.1 miles.
We originally wanted to hike the trail but we were late to catch a shuttle bus that took us to the trail head. We drove there ourselves and decided to hike to the highest point of the trail and then back down. The trail is definitely meant for those who are physically fit because it was physically demanding.
I highly recommend doing this hike if you are into that kind of stuff and also want to see Mount Doom close up! FYI, Mount Ngauruhoe was a stand in for the famous Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings movies!!

One of the places in Malaysia that I recommend people going to is Penang for the food. There are other tourist attractions though and Penang Hill is one of them. One of the ways to get up is to use the Penang Hill Railway which is a tram that runs from the bottom to the top of Flagstaff hill.

From the top, you can see all of Georgetown and the view is amazing if you go on a clear day. We happened to be there when it was raining but by the time we got up, the first storm had passed so we were able to see below. After about an hour of roaming around, another rain storm passed by and the entire mountain top was covered in fog/clouds so we ended up taking the tram back down.

If you are afraid of heights, you might be a little afraid of the tram since it does ascend at a very steep angle. There are alternate ways of getting up there but would require a lot more effort!!

January was a slow month for photos on Instagram. I guess it fits the weather! A lot of days were spent inside due to snow and how cold it was. I should just take more pictures indoors =)
Last week I posted pictures of the road trip on the North Island so of course this week I had to showcase the south island of New Zealand! I enjoyed the landscapes a lot more while driving down to Queenstown and the landscapes changed a lot more as we continued our drive.

The south featured more mountainous landscapes and more roads bending around high hills. Don't be like us and get stuck in a ditch because we wanted to stop for a photo!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00582210481749726257noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7402094292390604458.post-19409632645940564672015-01-28T10:11:00.002-05:002015-01-28T10:11:56.001-05:00Monta Ramen : Las Vegas I honestly think this is the best place so far that has my favorite ramen soup base so far. Wherever I go, I always try to order the tonkatsu broth and luckily for me, this place specializes is in it! The first day we went on our trip, we wanted to go to this ramen place and within 30 minutes of them opening, they already had a 1 hour wait!

On our last day there, we arrived 10 minutes before they opened and were the first in line to sit down. I ordered their daily special which was the Tonkatsu with black garlic oil and it was amazing. The broth is very thick and it was filled with pork flavor. It was very creamy but not too oily where you would feel disgusting after a big bowl of ramen.

Yay!! In two weeks I will be flying to Florida to Universal studios to visit the Wizarding world of Harry Potter and more! We are spending 4 days there and I am super excited. When we booked our vacation, we were told to expect a welcome package and I have been checking for it everyday the USPS comes to my door.

Last Friday, it finally came and I got to open it by myself hahaha!!! It came with a stuffed owl, welcome letter, and our tickets for our trip for the four days =). I can't wait to go and you know I will be posting about it =)

Whenever someone asks me how they should travel within New Zealand, I always tell them they have to drive and if they can, drive themselves. The roads are empty and there are plenty of lookout points where you can stop and enjoy the view as you go from one town to another.

The North Island is filled with rolling green hills, livestock, and trees that lined up perfectly. If you were on a tour bus, you would be angry that you couldn't stop to get a nice picture of the scenery! We stopped several times and because the roads were empty, we were never late to our destination.

Whenever I revisit these photos I always want to go back because in my mind, New Zealand is synonymous with adventure.

I absolutely love it when it rains or snows in NYC. The colors of the city come out differently and at night, the streets light up from the wet ground. People walk or run fast to get to their destination while trying to stay as dry as possible!

I prefer that it does not rain EVER but if it had to, then I don't mind being outside taking photos =). I still prefer snow over rain though, what do you guys think? Which do you prefer if you had to walk outside for lunch or to take the train home after work?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00582210481749726257noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7402094292390604458.post-5911642251229893522015-01-15T19:25:00.000-05:002015-01-15T19:25:23.048-05:00Throwback Thursday: Wellington, New Zealand

For those that are fans of the Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, they would know that Wellington is where the movies were filmed. The second day we were there, we headed to Mount Victoria to get an overview of the city before we returned the rental car. It's a very popular place to go to since it gives panoramic views and we can confirm this because for as long as we were there, there were tons of tour buses that came and left the mountain top.

After leaving, we walked around the city before everything closed. Being from New York City, I always forget that other cities might not stay open past 5pm and stores were limited after that time!

I have always been asked how I shoot my long exposures at night or what the right settings are. Most of my photos that I have taken in the last nine years have been trial and error and getting to learn how my camera processes light.

This one is currently hanging in my bedroom wall on canvas!

I absolutely love talking about photography and teaching people what I have learned but in the end, all cameras are different! In order for you to take long exposures, you would definitely have to know how to use the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to get the affect you want.

I personally love long exposures where the lights have a 'star' affect and the water is smooth. For those photos, I always shoot with a small aperture, long shutter speed (30 secs or more), and the lowest ISO possible. Since I have used my cameras for so long, it takes me one or two photos before I get the right one for my liking!

Some of my favorite long exposures that I have taken over the years are in this blog post =). Have a look!
